We're not the last of the month quite yet, but since I didn't write anything for June I thought I'd get to it right away. After all, I am writing for myself, on my own terms.
And that's part of the beauty of this project. It's a way to make sure I'm always on my toes, always taking time to be mindful and recenter, but it's also a way to process and let things go. And sometimes, the processing doesn't happen on the page, but in real-life, where it's actionable.
In June, an onslaught of news concerning abortion laws hit us all square in the face, and sent me—to be quite honest—reeling. I am, like a lot of us, constantly angry at the bans on uteruses. It is a daily thing, it doesn't go away. And it won't, completely, until the world changes and everyone, every single one of us, is considered a person, fully. But watching society regress, and put into question issues we had put to rest is too much. Writing about it wouldn't be enough.
Now, I won't get started on news in July, because things are just piling on at this point. It's like we're barely taking a step forward, but very easily taking three back. And it's all been compounded since the start of the pandemic.
There will always be debate, or someone playing devil's advocate. And I get it, argument is healthy. It's how we learn and grow and evolve. But does the devil need an advocate when we're talking about bodies? Same-sex marriage? Same-sex sex? I don't think it does. It's not a question of right or wrong, it's a question of do you think people all deserve the same rights or not. Do you believe everyone is a whole person or not. And it's awful to see how many people don't. Have never. And are bothered by what is going on in others' pants, or happens in their bedrooms.
For this month, I'm inviting us all to reflect on these things; to learn about them; to share about them; and try to find ways we can be allies—whatever the cause.
And if you need it, seek help.
